Friday, September 2, 2022 (unable to add the videos on spinning wool, but will do so when I get a chance!)
I made French toast with jam for breakfast. Over breakfast mom and I talked about how lived experiences are more valuable than books/education. She wrote a Chinese idiom on the paper for me to read. I think the literal translation is: "Thousands of scrolls of books do not equal to the thousands of miles of roads walked." (Those who know Chinese more than me, please feel free to comment to correct me.)
We talked about how so many of life's lessons and experiences can't be taught through reading a book or in a physical classroom. When we experience things through discussion, our senses, our bodies, and our feelings, that's when we really learn something. That's one reason why I thing field trips are so important for students!
My daily dose of the cute sheep that we see every day. Love them so much.
Mom and I waited for the 200 bus to Masterton and Heni picked us up!
We visited the visitor center in Masterton and got a few ideas of more sites to see in town. The staff person decorated the small space so brightly. I loved all the pictures and sayings.
We first went to the art gallery right next door to the visitor center.
We took a walk in Queen Elizabeth Park. Pretty Henley Lake, beautiful day for a stroll.
We went into the Sheep Museum again today because mom wanted to buy a wool hat for dad. We met Lynette who was volunteering at the cashier and also demonstrating how she spins wool. She's been spinning for 40 years now. She and her husband used to own a sheep farm. After her husband died three years ago, she sold the farm because she didn't want to work so hard anymore. Lynette has four children and eleven grandchildren. She demonstrated how she spins the wool into yarn. If she spins from 7AM to 7PM, she can get one spool of yard. Lynette LOVES spinning.
Muddy shoes/boots are all around because of the terrain. People take off their boots and leave them outside restaurants and stores to be considerate.
We like going to McDonald's to see if there are any specialty items. I was hoping to see a lamb burger or something of that sort. Nope. Mom wanted a strawberry sundae and apple pie. I asked her if that was lunch and she was okay with it. Mmmm, not me though. I got a chicken pie at the bakery.
Mom wanted to come into this thrift/second hand store. So we took a look around. Very well organized space and well labeled. I was particulary drawn to the knitted blankets and booties. I've been trying my hand at knitting. It doesn't come easy to me, especially at the turn. I get confused. So I really appreciate these pieces that were in the store.
Keep the idiom paper! I like keeping those from mom and dad. Chinese idioms sound so much more profound compared to the English version.
ReplyDeleteThat spinning wheel is SO COOL!!! Can't believe it takes 12 hours to spin one spool. All the places you've been walking through are so beautiful and peaceful. Long, long walks on vacation are DA BOMB.
ReplyDeleteWait...is that a DEEP FRIED McDonald's apple pie??? :O
