Persimmon Picking

Today's travels took mom, dad, and me to Hercules, CA.

We spend the morning at Auntie Cecilia's house picking fuyu persimmon. It's the hard and flat kind. Auntie had some fruit picking cutters. It wasn't all that easy to pick the fruit. I'm pretty short and had to hold the cutters which were a bit heavy. It was fun reaching, cutting, and trying to catch the fruit! Mom and I picked the persimmon. Dad's job was to take the leaves and branches off the persimmon. Auntie Cecilia directed me to the fruit to pick. Some were more ripe and orange than others. After you pick them, they can still ripen for a few days at room temperature.

We had lunch with Auntie Milla and Uncle Rudy. Uncle Rudy told me that he used to carry me as a baby and throw me up into the air and I would laugh with glee. Mom, on the other hand, was nervous about it all.

Onward to pick fruit at Uncle Rudy and Auntie Milla's place. More persimmon, but this time it was the Hachiya persimmon which is round and soft. I prefer Fuyu. People tell me that Hachiya's are used to bake bread and other yummy treats.

So many persimmons were left on the trees. They are so high up that we couldn't reach them. Guess the birds will eat them.

I remember when I was little and Gong Gong Po Po lived in Napa, we'd drive there from SF. I recall mom and dad stopping at a tree on the side of the road and that they jumped out of the car to pick the Hachiya persimmon. They did it quickly because they essentially were "stealing" from someone. LOL...
