Spontaneous Trip to Sedona

January 9, 2023

Sometimes it's nice to not have everything planned out. Spontaneity can be a good thing. I wanted to go on a trip in January but wasn't sure where to go. A friend's trip to the National Parks inspired me and so Sedona, Arizona it is! Last week, I booked a trip through Expedia: flight, accommodations, and car rental. I was going to take a solo trip because it seemed as if many people aren't available to go because of work/school. But yesterday when Victor shared I was going to Sedona, friends, Shirley and Carina were interested. Unfortunately, Shirley had too many things on the calendar and couldn't be as spontaneous. So Carina booked a flight and we're off on a five day trip together!

Thanks, Shirley, for dropping us off at the airport!

The flight was two hours and smooth. The airport at Phoenix totes that they are the Friendliest Airport. I would say that is true. Everyone along the way was very nice!  We took the airport train/tram to the rental car area and got our vehicle. Super easy and we were off on a two hour car ride to Sedona!

So happy to get our first sunset on our first day in Arizona.
The sky was gorgeous. I'm looking forward to three more sunsets in this area.

During the ride, I asked Carina to select music to play. She chose Mac Miller, an artist I never heard of. Carina shared that he died in 2018 of an accidental drug overdose.  He was 26. He died of an accidental overdoes of cocaine, fentanyl, and alcohol. Miller sang about his struggles/addiction. The person who sold him the fentanyl laced drugs was sentenced to 17.5 years in prison.
Fentanyl distribution has a mandatory sentence of 20 years.

I don't listen to rap music much but can appreciate it.
I enjoyed listening to these three songs when he was on NPR Tiny Desk. Check it out!

We checked into our inn, walked in the brisk night air to dinner, ate Mexican food, and walked back.  Sedona is 4,350 feet in elevation. Phoenix is 1,086 feet in elevation. It's much colder in Sedona.
I prefer this than the high temperatures in the summer.
The night sky provides great opportunity for star gazing. Looking forward to it.
