Lantau Island
Went to Sang Kee at Tin Hau again. Such yumminess. Dad said that we were being cheap and should each order a bowl of jook. No way. Mom and I share one bowl of jook and whatever side dish and that's enough. Always stuffed when we walk out.
We took the MTR to Tung Chung Station and then a bus ride to the Big Buddah on Lantau Island.
It was a bit foggy, but the Buddha was very visible.
We decided to take a walk along some trails and ended up at this spot where there are teachings written on wood pieces. Mom said these teachings are like the 10 commandments, except there were way more than 10 of these.
We took another path that led to a 2 hour hike. Mmmm, we didn't have the time, but we decided to walk in just to take a look. Another hiker coming down said it's pretty steep with lots of stairs. We appreciated the warning. We stopped and turned around when we saw these stairs. haha
We hiked up the 248 steps to the Buddah.
A lot of the kids at this spot were holding the toy wind spinners. So fun! I remember dad and mom used to buy things like this for us too when we came to HK.
Had to stop and have some Tofu Fa and Sesame Paste. Made our own yin yang version.
It was warming to our bodies and mom finished it so fast!
We took the bus to Tai O next. All the transportation was easily marked and before we got off the bus, we asked the bus driver if there was another way to get back to HK. He suggested the boat, which is what we were hoping for.
Tai O is a fishing village. There are many stores that sell dry fish, dry shrimp, shrimp paste, dry seafood, etc. The smell was pretty strong, but it wasn't unpleasant- at least not to me.
Squid!
First street snack - fish balls! There were big and we each had one.
So many stalls everywhere.
Second stop- mochi- mango and peanut and sesame. The mochi was so big! We had half of each one.
I stopped to get this begonia drink which I think is very well known here. Merchants talk about the benefits of drinking this: lower cholesterol levels, etc. I just enjoyed the lightly sweetened and a bit sour drink.
I found out online that these houses are not for sale. Once a family member dies/moves out, they have to pass it on to another family member. If there are no more family members, then the place stays vacant and goes to the government.
Fourth stop- tried a new item. Fried turnip cake and more fish balls. This time we got the curry fish balls. Not too spicy!
I really wanted to try these sweet fried donuts. I got in line and mom counted 47 people in front of me. Wow....I still wanted to wait. We only waited 20ish minutes. They came out of the fryer hot, soft and crispy.
So tranquil on this day. It was overcast, but I loved the weather and temperature. Totally pleasant.
Mom and I took the bus and Sun Ferry back to Central. Napped on both modes of transport. The ferry ride is really lovely and comfortable. We met Auntie Loreet, Vickki, Robin, Vance, and Auntie Sarah for dinner at West Villa Restaurant at Lee Garden 1. Bummed I forgot to take a picture. Another good day.
Note to self: we've been out three full days in a row. We need to take it easy, slow down, and rest.
